Before taking simvastatin, please advise your health care professional if you have any of the following conditions: an alcohol problem; any hormone disorder (such as diabetes, under-active thyroid); infection; kidney disease; liver disease; muscle disorder or condition; recent surgery; severe injury; an unusual or allergic reaction to simvastatin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives; if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant; if you are breast-feeding; if you have had any past problems with the muscles after using a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (“statin”) such as atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, or rosuvastatin; do excessive physical exercise.

Take simvastatin tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the simvastatin with a drink of water. Simvastatin is usually recommended as a single dose in the evening. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your physician.

Rare side effects that you should report to a health care professional as soon as possible include: blurred vision; dark yellow or brown urine; fever; muscle pain; muscle tenderness; or weakness; unusual tiredness or weakness. Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome) include: diarrhea; gas; headache; nausea; skin rash; stomach upset. Some people may have other reactions. If you notice any unusual effect, check with your physician.

It is important to tell your physician about all the medicine that you are using or plan to use. Interactions with simvastatin may occur with: Alchohol-containing beverages; amiodarone; antacids; anticoagulants; certain antibiotics such as clarithromycin and erythromycin; corticosteroids; danazol; digoxin; diltiazem; grapefruit juice; medicines for fungal infections (examples: fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, voriconazole); medicines for treating HIV infections; medicines that suppress your immune response (cyclosporine); medicines to lower cholesterol or triglycerides (examples: clofibrate, colestipol, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, niacin); nefazodone; verapamil.

Simvastatin is only part of a total cholesterol-lowering program. Your doctor or dietician can suggest a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet that will reduce your risk of getting heart and blood vessel disease. Avoid alcohol and smoking, and keep a proper exercise schedule. If you are going to have surgery tell your doctor or health care professional that you are taking simvastatin. Let your physician know if you suffer a severe injury or severe infection.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
