Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. It helps many men get and keep an erection when they become sexually stimulated. Sildenafil works by allowing the penis to fill with enough blood to cause an erection. The medicine by itself will not induce an erection as sexual stimulation is required.

Sildenafil is intended for use in men only as prescribed by their doctors. Sildenafil must never be used by men who are taking medicines that contain nitrates of any kind. If sildenafil is taken with any nitrate, your blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe or life threatening level.
Sildenafil is taken one hour before you plan to have sex. Beginning in about 30 minutes and for up to 4 hours, sildenafil can help you get an erection if you are sexually excited. It you take sildenafil after a high-fat meal, the medicine may take longer to start working. Sildenafil is to be taken no more than one dose per day.
Side effects are usually mild to moderate and usually don’t last longer than a few hours. Side effects are often dose dependent so higher doses are more likely to cause more intense side effects than lower doses. The most common side effects include headache, flushing, and upset stomach. Less common side effects include temporary changes in color vision, eye sensitivity to light, or blurred vision.
In rare instances, people taking sildenafil have reported a sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes. If this occurs, contact a doctor immediately. Also rarely, men have reported an erection lasting many hours. Any erection lasting longer than 4 hours must be treated immediately to prevent permanent damage.
Sudden loss or decrease in hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness, has been rarely reported in people taking sildenafil. If this occurs, stop taking sildenafil and contact your doctor immediately. As well, heart attack, stroke, irregular heart beats, and death have been reported in people taking sildenafil. Usually these men have had heart problems prior to taking this medicine.
Sexual activity may put extra strain on the heart, especially if you have heart problems. If you have heart problems and experience any side effects while having sex, stop and seek immediate medical attention.
Sildenafil does not protect you or your partner from getting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Before taking sildenafil, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart problems, stroke, high or low blood pressure, vision loss, eye disease, liver problems, blood problems, allergies, stomach ulcers, are taking any other medicines, have a deformed penis, or have ever had an erection that lasted more than 4 hours. Caution is advised in the elderly as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medicine.
Tell your doctor about all medicines that you are taking. The most important drug interaction that may occur with sildenafil is medicine that contains nitrates. Blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe level causing dizziness, fainting or even a heart attack or stroke. Other drug interactions may occur with alpha blockers for high blood pressure or prostate problems (eg. Doxazosin, prazosin, terazosin), causing dizziness or fainting. Other possible interactions include amlodipine, cimetidine, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, rifampin, ritonavir, and saquinavir.
Do not take more sildenafil than prescribed by your doctor. If you think you need a larger dose, check with your doctor. Sildenafil is not to be taken more than once a day.
Sildenafil is not for regular use. Take only before sexual activity. Never take two doses of sildenafil at the same time.
